Residents of Bengaluru are advised to prepare for a major water supply disruption lasting up to 60 hours, starting 15 September, as the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) undertakes essential maintenance work on the Cauvery Water Supply System. The temporary shutdown will affect large parts of the city and is expected to cause significant inconvenience unless adequate preparations are made.
Bengaluru Water Supply Cut for 60 Hours; Check Date and Time Area-wise
The BWSSB will shut down operations at the Cauvery Stage V pumping station starting from 1 am on 15 September to 1 pm on 17 September, to carry out critical maintenance activities. Additionally, maintenance work will also be undertaken at Phase-1 and Phase-2 pumping stations under Cauvery Stages I, II, III, and IV, which will result in a 24-hour shutdown from 6 am on 16 September to 6 am on 17 September.

Impact on All Areas Dependent on Cauvery Project in Bengaluru
This disruption will affect all areas in Bengaluru that depend on the Cauvery project for drinking water. BWSSB supplies around 1,460 million litres per day (MLD) to Bengaluru through the first four stages of the Cauvery Water Supply Project. With the newly implemented Stage V, an additional 750 MLD will be added but at a considerable cost.
Bengaluru's drinking water is sourced from a reservoir located 90 km away and about 350 metres below the city's elevation. The process of pumping this water uphill to reach city households incurs an electricity cost of nearly Rs 3 crore per day, yet still only meets about 50% of the city's total demand.

These works are part of a planned emergency maintenance program, focusing on pipeline upgrades, electrical and mechanical inspections, and system efficiency improvements at various water treatment plants and key pipeline junctions across the city's main supply network.
Speaking about the disruption, BWSSB Chairman V Ram Prasath Manohar stressed the importance of the scheduled maintenance. "These works are essential to ensure the smooth functioning and sustained operations of pumping stations and major pipelines of the Cauvery Water Supply Project," Manohar told The News Minute.
What Should Bengaluru Residents Do? Check BWSSB's Advisory
With the city facing a potential water scarcity for over two days, BWSSB has issued a clear advisory:
- Store enough water to last through the entire disruption period.
- Avoid unnecessary usage of water between 15 and 17 September.
- Check with apartment associations or community water storage systems for water management plans.
- Postpone water-heavy activities such as car washing, gardening or deep cleaning.
