Bengaluru Water Supply Rules Change: BWSSB Mandates Aerators, Warns of 50% Water Cut and Rs 5,000 Fine

Bengaluru residents will have to tighten their water usage as the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has rolled out fresh water conservation measures amid growing concerns over falling groundwater levels and below-normal rainfall.

Bengaluru Water Rules Change: Aerators Mandatory by July 31, Warns of Water Supply Cut

As part of the new measures, the BWSSB has made it compulsory for homes, apartments, commercial establishments, industries, hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, government offices and even religious institutions to install water-saving aerators on taps by July 31, 2026.

BWSSB to Enforce Mandatory Aerator Installation Across Bengaluru

The board said aerators, also known as flow restrictors, can reduce water consumption by nearly 30% to 50% without affecting the water flow required for daily use. The move is aimed at cutting unnecessary wastage while ensuring that drinking water reaches more households during periods of water stress.

Bengaluru Water Supply Rules Change

Consumers who fail to install these devices before the deadline may face a 50% reduction in their water supply under the provisions of the BWSSB Act, 1964. The board has also stated that it reserves the right to install the devices itself and recover the installation cost from the respective property owners.

BWSSB Bans Bangalore Drinking Water for Car Washing, Gardens, Pools & Construction

Along with mandatory water-saving devices, the BWSSB has imposed an immediate ban on using potable water for several non-essential purposes across Bengaluru.

Residents and commercial establishments can no longer use drinking water for washing vehicles, watering gardens, construction work, cleaning roads and footpaths, road construction activities, operating decorative fountains, non-essential water use inside malls and cinemas, or filling and maintaining private and public swimming pools.

Instead, the board has directed people to use treated wastewater or other alternative water sources for such activities.

Sports Training Pools Get Limited Relief

The restriction on swimming pools does not apply to facilities being used for training athletes participating in state or national-level competitions. However, such institutions must obtain prior approval from the BWSSB before using drinking water.

BWSSB Warns of Rs 5,000 Fine and 50% Water Supply Cut for Rule Violators

The board has warned that anyone found violating the restrictions will face a fine of Rs 5,000 under Section 109 of the BWSSB Act, 1964. Continued non-compliance will attract an additional penalty of Rs 500 per day until the violation is rectified.

Apart from monetary penalties, consumers who ignore the mandatory aerator installation rule may also see their drinking water supply reduced by up to 50%.

Bengaluru Water Board Customer Helpline Number

The BWSSB has also appealed to citizens to help enforce the new rules. Residents can report instances of water misuse or violations by contacting the board's customer helpline on 1916.
