Southwest Monsoon Has Advanced

Broader seasonal trends also play a role in the current conditions. On Saturday, the IMD reported that the southwest monsoon had advanced into parts of the southeast Arabian Sea, southwest and southeast Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, the entire Nicobar Islands and parts of the Andaman Islands, including Sri Vijaya Puram, indicating a gradual northward progression.

The IMD has noted that conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to move further into more areas of the southeast Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal during the next three to four days. Earlier this week, the department said the southwest monsoon is likely to reach Kerala on May 26, ahead of the usual onset around June 1, even as it has projected below-normal rainfall over India for this monsoon season because of possible El Niño conditions.
