Over 25 crore workers are expected to join the nationwide Bharat Bandh today, called by a coalition of ten central trade unions. These unions are protesting against the government's new labour codes, privatisation of public assets, and are demanding an increase in the minimum wage to Rs 26,000 along with the restoration of the old pension scheme.
A forum of major trade unions, including the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS), and the Self Employed Women's Association (SEWA) has organized the strike to mobilize nationwide support. Amarjeet Kaur of AITUC told PTI, "More than 25 crore workers are expected to take part in the strike. Farmers and rural workers will also join the protest across the country."

Bharat Bandh July 9, 2025: Which Public Services Are Likely to Be Affected?
According to trade union leaders, several public and government-controlled sectors may see disruptions, including:
Banking and insurance services: Several bank unions, including the Bengal Provincial Bank Employees Association (under AIBEA), are participating. While the RBI has not declared a bank holiday, many banks may operate with reduced staff, leading to limited or delayed services. Customers are advised to check with their local branches.
Postal services: Significant disruption expected as postal workers join the strike.
Coal mining, Power and Industrial Production: Operations in major PSUs and coal mines may slow significantly due to worker participation.
State-run Public Transport: Buses and other government-run services could be curtailed or halted in many regions.
Government offices and PSUs: Staff at various administrative offices may join the strike, resulting in delay of routine government work.
Harbhajan Singh Sidhu of HMS confirmed PTI that "public services such as banking, postal, coal mining, factories, and state transport services will be affected due to the strike."
