Addressing MSP Disparities: CACP Meets in Bhopal to Rationalize Kharif Crop Pricing

The chairman of the Maharashtra State Commission for Agriculture Prices, Pasha Patel, emphasized the need to reduce the significant variations in Minimum Support Prices (MSPs) for crops suggested by different states. Patel made this statement while attending a meeting of the Commission for Agriculture Cost and Prices (CACP) for the western region, which was chaired by Vijay Pal Sharma.

Addressing Soybean MSP Disparities

Patel highlighted the substantial difference in the MSP for soybean for 2023-24 proposed by Karnataka compared to the rates suggested by other states. Karnataka recommended an MSP of Rs 10,184 per quintal, while Jharkhand proposed Rs 6,063, Madhya Pradesh Rs 4,600, Maharashtra Rs 6,776, Rajasthan Rs 4,410, Tamil Nadu Rs 4,650, Telangana Rs 6,851, and Uttar Pradesh Rs 4,635.

Patel expressed concern about the wide gap between Karnataka's proposal and those of other states, stating that it disadvantages farmers in those regions. He stressed the importance of rationalizing MSPs for soybean and other kharif crops to ensure fairness and benefit farmers across all states.

Discussions on Other Kharif Crops

In addition to soybean, the meeting also deliberated on MSPs for paddy, cotton, and tur arhar. Patel noted that these discussions aimed to determine appropriate pricing policies for kharif crops in the western region, considering various factors such as production costs, market conditions, and farmer welfare.

The meeting of the CACP for the western region highlighted the need for rationalizing MSPs for kharif crops, particularly in light of significant variations in proposals from different states. By addressing these disparities and ensuring fair pricing policies, the government can support farmers and promote sustainable agriculture practices.
