Bhutan Beckons Indian Industry to Explore Tourism Opportunities

Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay has urged the Indian industry to explore business opportunities in the tourism sector in Bhutan, emphasizing the deep relations between the two nations. During his five-day visit to India, Tobgay addressed the India-Bhutan Tourism: Expanding Horizons dialogue organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in New Delhi.

Excellent Relations with India

Expressing his desire to meet industry leaders, Tobgay highlighted the excellent relations between Bhutan and India, emphasizing the importance of India as an immediate neighbor. He expressed his hope for an increase in Indian visitors to Bhutan.

Investment Opportunities in Bhutan

Tobgay highlighted the immense opportunities in Bhutan's travel and tourism industry, inviting investors to establish hotels, restaurants, and wellness centers in the country. He mentioned that 72 percent of Bhutan is under forest cover, providing a unique natural environment for tourism.

Simplified Travel for Indians

The Bhutanese Prime Minister emphasized the ease of travel for Indians, requiring only a permit at a cost of around Rs 1200, which is lower compared to tourists from other parts of the world. He expressed his expectation of welcoming around 1.50 lakh Indian tourists in 2024, more than double the 72,659 visitors in 2023.

Improved Transportation

Tobgay mentioned the upcoming railway service between India and Bhutan, offering a cost-effective means of transport. The train facility will connect Kokrajhar in Assam to Gelephu in Sarpang, Bhutan. He also shared that the number of airlines operating to Bhutan is expected to increase in the coming years as part of an agreement between the two nations.

Emotional Visit to India

Sharing his experience of his India visit, Tobgay expressed his admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, referring to him as an older brother. He described his time in New Delhi as being among friends and shared that the visit had been very emotional for him.
