US President Donald Trump has announced fresh trade penalties aimed at countries that keep doing business with Iran, sharply raising pressure on Tehran. Nations that continue commercial ties with the Islamic Republic will now face a 25% tariff on all trade with the United States, effective immediately, Trump said on social media on Tuesday.
The move marks a significant widening of Washington's economic measures, seeking to push Iran further out of global markets and intensify financial strain on Tehran. The tariff threat comes as regional tensions remain high and governments weigh their energy and security links with Iran.

Trump Iran tariff and Tehran's warning of retaliation
Iran has responded by stressing readiness for any confrontation. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said Iran's armed forces are fully prepared to defend the country against attack and accused the United States and Israel of fuelling instability inside Iran through foreign interference and covert support for unrest.
The White House has indicated that Trump is keeping several options open in dealing with Iran, including the possible use of military force. Officials maintain that diplomatic engagement is still Trump's preferred approach, even as Washington seeks to tighten economic pressure through the new 25% tariff threat on countries maintaining trade links with Tehran.

Speaking to reporters, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump is watching diplomatic messages from Tehran, despite differences between Iran's private communications and public statements. Leavitt added that Trump "is not afraid to use military force" if considered necessary. Leavitt also said Trump is due to meet Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado on Thursday, signalling attention to political shifts across energy-producing regions.
The standoff with Iran is unfolding while protests continue across the country, driven by high inflation, economic hardship and widespread anger over governance. A US-based human rights group has reported that more than 500 people have been killed and over 10,000 arrested during the unrest, which remains a serious domestic challenge for Tehran as the tariff dispute grows.
