All eyes are now at the Election Commission to announce the dates for poll of Bihar legislative assembly election anytime soon. A press conference is scheduled at 4:00 pm on Monday. While we await the election dates for the 243-member state assembly, did you know the cities that contribute the most to Bihar state's economy? At the top of the list is Bihar's capital city, Patna.
Top Cities In Bihar GDP-Wise:
According to the data by the Bihar Index, the largest city of Bihar economy-wise is Patna, followed by Muzaffarpur, East Champaran, Begusarai, and Bhagalpur & Gaya. Here are these cities GDPs:
Patna is the only city with GDP above $32 billion. All other cities in Bihar have GDP below $5 billion with exception of Muzaffarpur. Check the full list below:
Notably, the state's GDP was estimated at Rs 1,097,264 crore (US$130 billion) in 2025-26, which is approximately $130 billion. For this fiscal, the state is estimated to have about 22% GDP growth rate.
Here is the Budget analysis of Bihar, as per PRS India:
- The Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) of Bihar for 2025-26 (at current prices) is projected to be Rs 10.97 lakh crore, amounting to growth of 22% over 2024-25.
- Expenditure (excluding debt repayment) in 2025-26 is estimated to be Rs 2,94,075 crore, a decrease of 10% from the revised estimates of 2024-25. In addition, debt of Rs 22,820 crore will be repaid by the state.
- Receipts (excluding borrowings) for 2025-26 are estimated to be Rs 2,61,357 crore, an increase of 7% as compared to the revised estimate of 2024-25.
- Fiscal deficit for 2025-26 is targeted at 3% of GSDP (Rs 32,718 crore). In 2024-25, as per the revised estimates, fiscal deficit is expected to be 9.2% of GSDP, higher than the budgeted 3% of GSDP.
Bihar Assembly Election 2025 Dates:
The assembly election in Bihar is mostly expected between October to November 2025. The Election Commission will announce the dates on Monday. This comes after a series of meeting between Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi in Patna during the weekend.
During these meetings, they assessed various factors such as security arrangements, logistics, and enforcement preparedness for seamless, free and fair elections.
Recently, Gyanesh also stated they are fully committed to conducting elections in Bihar that are transparent, inclusive and peaceful. He also revealed the completion of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar, which led to purification of voters list, which he claims is after 22 years. He also said, the ERO (Electoral Registration Officer) in each of the 243 constituencies, were assisted by y 90,207 BLOs for completing the exercise.
Bihar Assembly Election 2020:
The previous assembly elections were held in October-November 2020. After the election, the National Democratic Alliance formed the state government, with Nitish Kumar becoming Chief Minister. Later, in August 2022, Nitish Kumar led the JD(U) to sever ties with the NDA and formed a government with the RJD led by Mahagathbandhan. Later, in January 2024, Nitish Kumar led the JD(U) to sever ties with the RJD and once again formed a government with the BJP-led NDA, as per Wikipedia.
