Boeing and Indian Start-up Join Forces to Co-Develop Autonomous Surface Vessels

A Boeing company has entered into a memorandum of understanding with an Indian start-up specialising in unmanned systems to jointly develop and produce autonomous surface vessels. This collaboration, involving Boeing's Liquid Robotics and Sagar Defence Engineering, aligns with the US-India Roadmap for Defence Industrial Cooperation. The partnership is set to enhance undersea domain awareness through manufacturing, system interoperability, ocean testing, and establishing maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities for the Wave Glider ASV platform.

Boeing Partners with Indian Start-up for Vessels

Strengthening Indo-Pacific Production Capabilities

The agreement aims to bolster industry partnerships and production capabilities across the Indo-Pacific region. Liquid Robotics is known for designing and manufacturing the Wave Glider, a highly experienced Uncrewed Surface Vehicle (USV). "The US-India relationship continues to strengthen, and we see immense potential in deepening our collaboration," stated Salil Gupte, president of Boeing India and South Asia. This partnership with Sagar Defence Engineering highlights a commitment to co-developing critical systems in India.

Shared Vision for Maritime Security

Nikunj Parashar, founder of Sagar Defence Engineering, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration. "This strategic partnership brings together the best of the US and Indian defence capabilities by co-developing advanced technologies like the Wave Glider," he said. The collaboration aims to address complex maritime challenges and enhance global maritime security. It marks a significant milestone in US-India defence industrial cooperation, focusing on undersea domain awareness.

Potential for MRO Hub Development

The initiative underscores India's potential as a hub for MRO and sustainment of such platforms, with export opportunities across the region. Advancing autonomous underwater capabilities will foster ecosystem growth and drive innovation in next-generation defence technologies. The partnership aligns with the collaborative vision of both governments as outlined in the recent US-India Joint Leaders Statement.

This project represents the first collaboration of its kind between a US company and an Indian start-up in this sector. It signifies a step forward in strengthening defence ties between the two nations while contributing to innovation within India's defence ecosystem.
