As Maharashtra observes a public holiday today for Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi, many investors are wondering whether the stock markets in India are open or closed. Despite the official holiday declared by the Maharashtra government, both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will remain open for trading today, Monday, September 8, 2025.
Is Stock Market Open or Closed Today on September 8?
The clarification comes amid some confusion caused by the state government's announcement shifting the Eid-e-Milad public holiday from September 5 to September 8 in Mumbai and its suburbs.

However, as per the official BSE trading holiday calendar for 2025, there is no scheduled market holiday in September. Therefore, trading at both BSE and NSE will continue uninterrupted. The exchanges have not issued any revised notifications regarding market closures, and September 8 is a regular trading day for equity, F&O, and currency segments.
Investors can verify today's market status by visiting the official BSE website and checking the "Trading Holidays" section under the Market Info tab. The September calendar clearly shows that no trading holidays are scheduled for the entire month, ruling out any confusion.
Are School, Government Offices and Banks Open Today? Check Holiday on September 8 in Mumbai?
While the stock market is open, the holiday has impacted other sectors. Banks, government offices, and schools in Mumbai will remain closed today, while other parts of Maharashtra already observed the Eid-e-Milad holiday on September 5.
The GAD circular also made it clear that September 5 was a regular working day for government departments in Mumbai and its suburbs, which observe the holiday today instead.
Why Maharashtra Government Declared a Holiday in Mumbai Today?
This change was made to accommodate a large religious procession scheduled for today and to prevent overlap with Anant Chaturdashi, observed on September 6, when Ganesh Visarjan takes place across Maharashtra.
The Department of General Administration (GAD) issued a circular announcing a public holiday in Mumbai and its suburbs on September 8 to mark Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi, the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad. This festival is widely celebrated by the Muslim community, particularly by Sufi and Barelvi groups, and includes major processions and public gatherings.
Originally, the Eid-e-Milad holiday was set for September 5, but to prevent clashes with Ganesh immersion processions on September 6, the state government shifted the holiday for Mumbai. The goal was to ensure smooth management of public events, reduce traffic congestion, and maintain civic order.
