The common man of India has a lot of Expectations from the Union Budget 2025 as it holds huge significance for the middle class. These expectations are centered around tax relief, affordable housing, healthcare benefits, and controlled inflation. With inflationary pressures, rising living costs, and growing financial burdens, the middle class is keenly anticipating relief in the form of tax cuts, subsidies, and policy reforms. The big question remains: Will Budget 2025 ease the cost of living for the middle class? Well, all focus has now shifted to the Finance Minister's speech which will have answers to all these questions.
Tax Relief and Higher Exemption Limits
One of the major expectations from the Union Budget 2025 is income tax relief. Reports suggest that the Finance Ministry may increase the basic exemption limit from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 10 lakh under the new tax regime. This move, if implemented, would significantly reduce the tax burden on salaried individuals and provide much-needed disposable income. Additionally, an increase in the standard deduction from the current Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh could further benefit taxpayers.

Rationalization of GST and Essential Goods Prices
The middle class continues to bear the brunt of high prices on essential commodities, particularly food, fuel, and household goods. Experts expect the government to rationalize Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates on essential items and expand subsidies on critical goods like cooking gas. Recent LPG price fluctuations have made household budgets tighter, and a potential reduction in gas cylinder prices could provide relief.
Affordable Housing and Real Estate Boost
Owning a home remains a major aspiration for the middle class, and Budget 2025 is expected to introduce measures to make housing more affordable. A revision of interest rate deductions under Section 80EEA for first-time homebuyers could incentivize homeownership. Additionally, expanding incentives for affordable housing developers could lead to increased supply and more reasonable prices.
Relief on Education and Healthcare Expenses
Rising education costs are a significant concern for middle-class families. The government may introduce higher tax deductions for tuition fees under Section 80C and interest paid on education loans. Similarly, medical expenses have surged post-pandemic, and an increase in the medical insurance premium deduction under Section 80D-from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000-would help families manage healthcare costs more effectively.
Impact on Interest Rates and Savings
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has maintained a steady repo rate at 6.5%, but a rate cut in 2025 could lower EMIs on home and auto loans, easing financial stress on middle-class borrowers. Additionally, higher interest rates on small savings schemes like the Public Provident Fund (PPF) and National Savings Certificate (NSC) could encourage long-term savings.
