The Economic Survey is a yearly document that offers a detailed picture of India's economy. Prepared by the Department of Economic Affairs under Chief Economic Advisor V Anantha Nageswaran, it reviews how the economy performed in the previous financial year.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is likely to present the Budget for FY 2026-27 in Parliament on February 1, 2026. Before that, the Ministry of Finance will table the Economic Survey, followed by a media briefing.

Economic Survey structure and key Budget for FY 2026-27 insights
The Economic Survey is released ahead of the Union Budget and often shapes expectations around policy choices. After tabling, the Chief Economic Advisor and senior Finance Ministry officials usually explain the main findings during a press conference and answer media questions.
The document is organised in two main sections, called Part A and Part B. Part A usually tracks major macroeconomic trends and reviews growth, inflation, trade, and public finances. Part B looks at specific themes such as social security, poverty, education, healthcare, human development, and climate-related concerns.
Economic Survey historical background and Budget for FY 2026-27 context
The first Economic Survey for India was brought out for 1950-51. Until 1964, this analysis was presented along with the Union Budget as a combined exercise. After that year, it has been placed before the Budget as a separate, standalone report.
This separation allowed Parliament and analysts to study the Economic Survey findings in advance of Budget proposals. As a result, the Survey now acts as a reference point for debate on fiscal choices, sector priorities, and broader economic strategy ahead of the Budget for FY 2026-27.
