Bumble Founder Whitney Wolfe Herd Steps Down As CEO, Passing The Torch To Lidiane Jones

The dating app Bumble announced on Tuesday that its fearless leader, Whitney Wolfe Herd, will be stepping down from the role of CEO. The reins will be handed over to Lidiane Jones, the current chief executive officer of instant messaging service Slack, in January 2024.

The news, however, came with a sting as Bumble's shares tumbled by 10% to a record low of $12.29 after the announcement. Once valued at over $20 billion, the company's worth has plummeted to $2.7 billion since its trading debut.

Wolfe Herd, who co-founded Bumble with Russian billionaire Andrey Andreev, achieved the status of America's youngest self-made woman billionaire at the age of 31 when the company went public in February 2021. Despite the recent decline in Bumble's market value, Wolfe Herd's net worth stands at a robust $510 million, and she retains a 17% stake in the company.

Under Wolfe Herd's leadership, Bumble has not only become a global brand but a pioneer in empowering women online. The app, known for its women-first approach, champions safety and confidence, whether users are seeking romantic connections, professional networking, or friendships.

Before the Bumble chapter, Wolfe Herd was part of the founding team at Tinder, a dating app under the Match Group. According to a BBC report, her departure from Tinder was marked by a lawsuit involving allegations of sexual harassment, with Wolfe Herd claiming she was stripped of her position due to gender bias. Match Group denied the accusations but settled the case with a $1 million payout to Wolfe Herd.

In a candid interview with TIME Magazine before Bumble's IPO in 2021, Wolfe Herd revealed that her ambition to create a women-first dating app stemmed from her experiences in abusive relationships. She aimed to engineer an ecosystem of healthy relationships, especially those involving men.

While stepping down as CEO, Wolfe Herd will continue to be an integral part of Bumble, taking on the role of executive chair. In a company statement, she expressed confidence in Lidiane Jones, describing her as a leader she "deeply" respects and believes will guide Bumble to even greater heights.

"I've thought hard about what type of leader could ultimately step into the CEO role as a successor and help continue taking Bumble to even greater heights, and I am so pleased to have found Lidiane. Lidiane's expertise and track record in product and technology is exceptional, and having her leading the next chapter of Bumble Inc. is a major win for our company, customers, and team," Wolfe Herd stated.

The timing of this leadership transition coincided with Bumble's release of its third-quarter earnings, revealing a revenue of $275.5 million. While slightly below estimates of $277 million, the figures highlight the app's resilience and continued success in a competitive market.
