Canada fuel excise tax suspended as Mark Carney responds to Iran war price rises

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has suspended the federal fuel excise tax from next Monday until Labor Day, citing sharp fuel price rises linked to the Iran war. The temporary measure aims to ease costs for drivers, truckers, and businesses. Carney, now leading a Liberal majority government, said his focus will be affordability, housing, and major economic projects.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended the federal fuel excise tax after fuel prices rose sharply. The move followed the Iran war and came after Carney secured a majority government. Carney said the tax pause starts next Monday and lasts until Labor Day. Carney described the change as temporary and aimed at easing costs.

Carney said the measure should lower expenses for truckers and businesses as well. Carney called it a responsible step during a period of higher pump prices. Carney also said the government will keep attention on affordability pressures. The action was Carney’s first major decision after the new majority outcome.

Mark Carney majority government and House of Commons numbers

Carney’s Liberals now hold 174 of the 343 seats in the House of Commons. The party will not need opposition support to pass legislation. The majority followed wins in three districts that became vacant after last year’s election. Carney’s government is the first in Canada to move from minority to majority.

After Monday’s results, the Liberal Party could remain in power until 2029. Carney said the government will focus on affordability, housing, and speeding up major economic projects. "Voters have placed their trust in our new governments plan,\" he said. Carney signalled these priorities soon after the seat count was confirmed.

Mark Carney election context, Donald Trump and Canada’s reliance

Carney won Canada’s election last year as anger grew over U.S. President Donald Trump’s annexation threats. Carney has promised to cut Canada’s reliance on the U.S. Those tensions shaped the campaign and public debate. Carney has framed the approach as protecting Canada’s economic independence and future trade options.

Later, five defections from opposition parties pushed Carney’s Liberals close to a majority. Four of the defectors came from the main opposition Conservative party. One defector cited Carney’s World Economic Forum speech in Davos, Switzerland. In that speech, Carney condemned economic coercion by great powers against smaller countries.

Mark Carney background, Davos response and international travel

Carney previously led the Bank of England and Canada’s central bank. Since replacing Justin Trudeau as prime minister, Carney has moved the Liberals towards the centre-right. Nelson Wiseman, professor emeritus at the University of Toronto, linked Carney’s rise to Trump’s impact. Wiseman also said global visibility helped Carney’s standing.

Wiseman said Canadians noticed Carney’s reception at Davos and his overseas travel. Carney visited 13 countries by last September while seeking alliances, investments, and trade pacts. \"World leaders want to do business with him,\" Wiseman said. The international outreach formed part of Carney’s effort to widen Canada’s options.

The fuel tax suspension is set to run from next Monday through Labor Day. It comes as Carney begins governing with a clear Commons majority. The Liberals now have enough seats to pass bills without opposition votes. Carney has linked early actions to affordability, housing needs, and advancing major economic projects.
