CCPA Launches Investigation into Ola Electric Over Alleged Whitewashing of Consumer Complaints

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has initiated an investigation into Ola Electric following complaints about service and product issues. Concerns have been raised regarding the handling of consumer grievances. The CCPA, led by Nidhi Khare, has tasked the Director General Investigation, who also heads the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), with this inquiry.

CCPA Investigates Ola Electrics Service Issues

The directive for this investigation was issued on November 6. The BIS Director General has been instructed to provide a detailed report within 15 days. This action follows Ola Electric's response to a CCPA notice, where the company claimed to have resolved 99.1% of the 10,644 complaints filed with the authority.

Consumer Grievances and Investigation

Despite Ola Electric's claims of resolution, feedback from a sample of complainants revealed dissatisfaction. Nidhi Khare stated that consumers felt their issues were merely superficially addressed and then closed. This prompted the CCPA's investigation team to delve deeper into the matter.

The decision to investigate further comes after the CCPA received over 10,000 complaints via the National Consumer Helpline (NCH). The regulator had previously issued a notice to Ola Electric on October 7, citing alleged breaches of consumer rights, misleading advertisements, and unfair trade practices.

Response from Ola Electric

Ola Electric responded to the CCPA's notice on October 21. The company asserted that it had resolved nearly all complaints lodged with the authority. However, this claim was challenged by consumer feedback, leading to further scrutiny by the CCPA.

The investigation aims to thoroughly examine the nature of these complaints and assess whether they were genuinely resolved or merely dismissed without proper resolution. The findings will be crucial in determining any further actions against Ola Electric.

This ongoing investigation highlights the importance of addressing consumer grievances effectively and transparently. It underscores the role of regulatory bodies like the CCPA in safeguarding consumer rights and ensuring fair business practices.
