The Union Agriculture Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, announced plans to form a committee to tackle the significant gap between farm-gate and retail prices of horticultural products. He highlighted that while farmers sell vegetables for Rs 5, consumers pay Rs 50. This disparity needs addressing, Chouhan stated at an agricultural conference in the national capital.

Chouhan proposed a dual strategy to manage price fluctuations. In instances of price surges, like the current situation with tomatoes, he suggested that both the Centre and state governments could subsidise transport costs. This would help urban consumers access affordable vegetables while safeguarding farmers' interests.
Enhancing Agricultural Research and Practices
The minister also introduced plans for Krishi Chaupal, set to launch next month. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between agricultural research and practical application. He stressed the importance of improving the operations of over 730 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) across India.
Chouhan expressed concerns about KVKs' fragmented management under various authorities such as ICAR, universities, and state governments. "Some states don't pay adequate attention to KVKs. We need better coordination," he remarked, noting his discussions with 17 state governments to tackle key agricultural issues.
Model Farms and Agricultural Development
The minister urged states to create model farms covering 2-2.5 acres to showcase best agricultural practices. He emphasised that agriculture is India's economic backbone, stating, "No progress is possible without strengthening this sector."
By focusing on these initiatives, Chouhan aims to address critical challenges in agriculture and ensure a more equitable distribution of resources and knowledge across the sector.
