Check Six Digit Alphanumeric Code Before Buying Jewellery: BIS

On the occasion of Dhanteras and the forthcoming Diwali celebration, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) of the Department of Consumer Affairs, which is part of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, has urged people to buy hallmarked jewellery.

Purchasing gold on such occasions is said to bring prosperity and happiness to the family and is considered auspicious. In this light, understanding how to assure the purity of gold being purchased and receiving the best value for money is critical. Let's look at a few things to bear in mind when purchasing.

The hallmarking agency certifies gold based on Indian standards under the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Act. To put it another way, gold jewellery will be assessed and tested at official hallmarking institutes before being certified to meet national and international fineness and purity standards.

Hallmarking of 14, 18, and 22 karat gold jewellery and antiquities has been made required in 256 districts across the country as of June 23, 2021.

Only purchase BIS-registered jewellers' hallmarked gold/silver jewellery artefacts.
If the Hallmark isn't visible with the naked eye, ask the jeweller for a magnifying glass.

On hallmarked gold jewelry/artefacts, look for the following marks. With the adoption of a six-digit alphanumeric code on July 1, 2021, hallmarked gold jewellery pieces will have three marks.
