Chennai Rain Update: North Chennai Records Over 300 mm

Rainfall data from the Greater Chennai Corporation's monitoring network showed that Kathivakkam recorded 310.2 mm of rain by midnight, while Parrys also crossed the 300 mm mark. A separate report put rainfall at Parrys at 363.4 mm in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Sunday, October 18, highlighting the exceptional intensity of the spell.

Several neighbourhoods experienced waterlogging, with commuters facing difficulties on affected roads and stretches near Perambur High Road and Perambur railway station. The intense rainfall has also raised concerns about further disruption if heavy showers continue.

The RMC has issued a red alert for Chennai, indicating the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm in the specified warning period. Orange alerts have also been issued for neighbouring Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts, along with some other districts of Tamil Nadu.

Chennai Weather Forecast for October 19 to 24: More Heavy Rain Likely

The weather outlook remains unsettled for Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD)'s Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai, very heavy rainfall is forecast for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on October 19, October 20 and October 21. Heavy rain is likely to continue in parts of the region from October 22 to October 24.

The forecast means residents may have to deal with further waterlogging and travel delays, particularly in low-lying areas. People travelling to work or other destinations should check local weather and traffic advisories before setting out and avoid flooded roads, underpasses and stretches where water levels are rising.

Civic authorities have stepped up rainwater-clearance operations and deployed workers and emergency teams to manage possible flooding. Residents should follow instructions from local authorities and use official weather updates to track changes in the alert status.

Chennai School Holiday Tomorrow, October 19: Are Schools Closed Due to Rain?

Schools in Chennai are expected to observe a holiday on Monday, October 19, as Tamil Nadu marks Ayudha Pooja, a scheduled festival holiday. The holiday is part of the state's festive calendar and should not be confused with a separate school closure announced specifically because of heavy rainfall.

As of the latest reports checked for this update, a separate Chennai district-wide order closing schools due to rain had not been confirmed. Parents and students should check announcements from their respective schools and updates from the district administration in case weather conditions prompt additional instructions.

The possibility of further heavy rain makes it important to monitor official communications, particularly for schools in areas affected by waterlogging. Any additional closure specifically linked to the weather should be treated as confirmed only after an announcement from the relevant authorities.

People are advised to avoid unnecessary travel through flooded areas, remain cautious near drains and underpasses, and follow instructions issued by civic and disaster-response teams while the heavy-rain warning remains in place.
