China Opens Doors to 23 Countries, Including Maldives, for Hassle-Free Travel

China has announced the establishment of a "comprehensive mutual visa cooperation" agreement with 23 countries, including the Maldives. This development comes as Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu seeks to attract more Chinese tourists to the Indian Ocean island nation.

China's efforts to establish visa-free or simplified visa procedures with various countries aim to revitalize the declining number of international tourists visiting China and facilitate outbound travel for its citizens. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin highlighted the expanding "visa-free circle of friends" and the increasing number of countries entering the visa-free era.

Visa Agreements and Cooperation

China has concluded mutual visa exemption agreements covering different passports with 157 countries, reached agreements or arrangements on simplified visa procedures with 44 countries, and achieved comprehensive mutual visa cooperation with 23 countries, including Thailand, Singapore, Maldives, and the United Arab Emirates.

Significance of Maldives Agreement

The agreement with the Maldives holds particular significance in light of President Muizzu's recent visit to China, during which he urged Beijing to boost Chinese tourist arrivals to the Maldives. This development occurs amidst a diplomatic row between the Maldives and India, a major tourism market for the island nation.

Maldives Tourism Statistics

Despite India's position as the largest tourist market for the Maldives in 2023, recent statistics reveal a shift in tourist arrivals. As of January 28, 2023, the Maldives welcomed over 1.74 lakh tourists, with Russia, Italy, China, and the UK surpassing India in terms of tourist numbers.

Challenges for Chinese Tourism

China, which previously held the top spot for tourist arrivals in the Maldives with over 2.80 lakh tourists before the COVID-19 pandemic, is currently facing challenges in reviving its domestic and foreign tourism sectors. The country's nearly four-year lockdown policy and ongoing economic slowdown have contributed to these challenges.

Visa Convenience for Chinese Citizens

In addition to the visa agreements and cooperation, more than 60 countries and regions offer visa-free or visa-on-arrival convenience to Chinese citizens. These measures have enhanced the ease of international travel for Chinese citizens and increased the value of Chinese passports.
