Strait of Hormuz reopening urged as China welcomes US-Iran understanding
China welcomed the understanding reached between the United States and Iran to end the West Asia conflict and urged the early reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping. Foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian called for adherence to the agreed timetable, supported dialogue, and said Beijing appreciates Pakistan’s mediation efforts.
China welcomed the reported understanding between the United States and Iran to stop fighting in West Asia. Beijing also urged a quick reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for global shipping. The conflict lasted 107 days and pushed energy prices higher worldwide. President Donald Trump said the US and Iran had finished a deal to end the war.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Beijing expected the deal to move ahead as planned. "We hope the document will be signed according to the agreed timetable and all relevant parties will stay committed to peaceful solutions and resolve issues through dialogue and negotiation,\" Lin told a media briefing. Lin also said China valued Pakistan’s mediation in the talks.
China and Strait of Hormuz reopening
Lin said the Strait of Hormuz mattered for regional stability and global trade. Lin described it as a key waterway for international shipping. Lin added that calmer conditions suited both nearby countries and the wider world. China also referred to the negotiation text that linked the deal to reopening the route.
\"We have noted that the text of the memorandum of understanding for the first stage of negotiations between Iran and the United States includes the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz,\" Lin said. Lin added, \"We hope the Strait will become safe again for free passage at an early date.\" Lin said China would keep in touch with regional states and others.
US-Iran deal and Strait of Hormuz timeline
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the peace agreement was set for June 19 in Switzerland. Trump posted on Truth Social on Sunday evening about the talks. \"The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all,\" Trump wrote. The post eased pressure on global energy markets.
The agreement was worked out with mediators, including Pakistan and Qatar. Those mediators first helped secure a two-week ceasefire on April 8. The pause in fighting was later extended until the negotiations ended. The latest understanding also included steps linked to wider regional security.
The war began after US and Israel attacks on Iran on February 28. The strikes killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior commanders. China said it was ready to work with other countries to restore calm. Lin said Beijing would support efforts to bring peace to West Asia and the Gulf.
