Kenya Chooses Chinese Firm for $2.9 Billion JKIA Upgrade; New Deal Costs More Than Cancelled Adani Proposal

Nearly two years after scrapping its proposed airport agreement with India's Adani Group, Kenya has awarded a $2.9 billion contract to China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) for the expansion and modernisation of Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Kenya Picks China for $2.9 Billion Airport Project After Scrapping Lower-Cost Adani Deal

The new contract is around 50% higher in value compared with Adani's earlier proposal, which was estimated at nearly $2 billion.

Kenya had engaged with the Adani Group for several months to develop JKIA under a concession model. The proposed deal, valued at approximately $2 billion, aimed to upgrade one of East Africa's busiest aviation hubs.

Adani's Proposal Was Dropped Amid Political and Legal Controversy

However, the agreement was cancelled by President William Ruto's government in November 2024 following political opposition, legal challenges and intense public scrutiny. The decision also came amid allegations raised by the US Department of Justice against the Adani Group, allegations that the company denied.

Recently, the US Department of Justice closed the matter, citing a lack of conclusive evidence, bringing the legal episode to an end.

Kenya's New Chinese Deal Comes at a Higher Cost

With the award of the contract to the Chinese state-owned CCCC, Kenya has revived its long-delayed airport modernisation plans. The $2.9 billion project represents a significantly higher financial commitment compared with the earlier Adani proposal.

The development has drawn attention due to the price difference between the two projects, with the new agreement being roughly $900 million higher than the previous concession proposal.
