Cipla Ltd, a leading Indian pharmaceutical company remained in focus on Tuesday, October 27, after its September-quarter earnings revealed mounting pressure on profitability. The stock fell around 1% in afternoon trade as a sharp decline in net profit, shrinking operating margins and weaker North American sales overshadowed record quarterly revenue from its India business.

Cipla Share Price Today After Q2 Profit Drops 35% YoY to Rs 878 Crore, Margins Shrink

Cipla shares were trading at Rs 1,341.60, down around 1%, at 2:21 pm IST on Tuesday, October 27. The stock opened at Rs 1,352.10 and touched an intraday high of Rs 1,372.70 before slipping to a low of Rs 1,319.00.

Cipla Q2 Results

The earnings performance highlighted a divergence in Cipla's business operations. While its India business recorded its highest-ever quarterly sales, the gains were insufficient to offset weakness in North America and the active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) segment. The decline in consolidated profit and operating earnings has put the spotlight on the company's ability to restore margins and sustain growth across its key markets.

Cipla Q2 Results: Net Profit Falls 35% to Rs 878 Crore, Revenue Dips 2.4%

Cipla reported consolidated net profit of Rs 878 crore for the July-September quarter of FY27, marking a 35% decline from Rs 1,351 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year. Total income from operations also weakened, falling 2.4% year-on-year to Rs 7,404 crore from Rs 7,589 crore.

The sharper fall in profit compared with revenue indicates the extent of pressure on the company's operating performance. Lower sales in key overseas markets, alongside weaker contributions from certain business segments, affected earnings during the quarter.

Operating profitability deteriorated further. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) declined 26.8% year-on-year to Rs 1,388 crore from Rs 1,895 crore in Q2 FY26. The EBITDA margin narrowed to 18.7% from 25% a year earlier, representing a contraction of 6.3 percentage points.

However, the sequential performance offered some relief. Revenue increased 4% quarter-on-quarter, while the EBITDA margin improved by 200 basis points to 18.7%. The improvement suggests a partial recovery from the preceding quarter, although profitability remained substantially below the year-ago level.

Cipla India Business Records Highest-Ever Quarterly Sales

Cipla's domestic business emerged as the strongest contributor during the September quarter. Revenue from India rose 12% year-on-year to Rs 3,516 crore, compared with Rs 3,146 crore in the corresponding period last year. The company recorded its highest-ever quarterly sales in the domestic market, supported by the performance of its India portfolio.

Cipla North America Revenue Declines 19%, API Business Contracts Sharply

North America remained a major source of weakness for Cipla during the quarter. Revenue from the region fell 19% year-on-year to Rs 1,643 crore from Rs 2,039 crore. Given the importance of the North American market to the company's earnings profile, the decline weighed on the overall results.

The region is a key monitorable for investors because performance can be influenced by product launches, pricing trends, regulatory developments and competitive conditions. Weaker revenue from this market can also affect the overall product mix and profitability.

Cipla's One Africa business reported revenue of Rs 1,171 crore, down 1% year-on-year. Within the segment, South Africa revenue declined 3% to Rs 872 crore from Rs 901 crore. Meanwhile, the Emerging Markets and Europe business remained flat at Rs 967 crore.

The API and Others segment registered a much sharper contraction, with revenue plunging 59% year-on-year to Rs 107 crore from Rs 259 crore. Although this segment contributes less revenue than some of Cipla's larger businesses, the steep decline added to the pressure on the company's consolidated performance.
