Latest CNG Price Hike Timeline

Since April 2026, CNG prices in Mumbai have seen three consecutive revisions. The first hike came on April 12, when prices were increased by Rs. 1 per kg from Rs. 81 to Rs. 82 per kg after a rise in domestic gas prices. This was followed by another Rs. 2 per kg increase on May 13, taking the rate to Rs. 84 per kg amid rising global energy costs and geopolitical tensions.

And the latest CNG price hike where, Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) announced a further Rs. 2 per kg hike effective May 30, pushing the CNG price to Rs. 86 per kg.

The latest increase has been higher natural gas procurement costs and the depreciation of the Indian rupee. Overall, CNG prices in Mumbai have risen by Rs. 5 per kg in less than two months, increasing the fuel burden on lakhs of vehicle owners across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Why Has CNG Price Increased in Mumbai?

According to Mahanagar Gas Limited, the latest CNG price hike has been necessitated by rising input costs. The company stated that it has been forced to procure additional natural gas at market-linked prices to meet growing demand in the region.

Another main cause is the rupee depreciation and elevated global energy prices as key factors contributing to the increased cost burden on city gas distributors.

PNG Price Also Increased

Along with CNG, MGL has also revised the price of piped natural gas (PNG) supplied to households. Domestic PNG prices have been increased by Rs. 0.50 per standard cubic metre (SCM), taking the rate to Rs. 52 per SCM.

The revision is expected to marginally impact household cooking gas expenses for consumers across Mumbai and surrounding areas.
