In a significant move to enhance gas usage in the economy, India's Oil Minister, Hardeep Singh Puri, inaugurated 201 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations across 17 states and dedicated India's first small-scale Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) unit at Vijaipur in Madhya Pradesh.

CNG Revolution: 201 Stations, LNG Unit Unveiled Across India

Widespread CNG Station Inauguration

The 201 CNG stations, spread across 52 geographical areas in 17 states, have been established by 15 city gas distribution (CGD) entities of the GAIL group. These stations aim to promote the use of CNG as a greener alternative to conventional fuels and expand its availability to newer regions.

Diverse CGD Entities Involved

Out of the 15 CGD entities, notable contributors include GAIL Gas Ltd. with 53 stations, Indraprastha Gas Ltd. with 50 stations, GAIL with 43 stations, and Mahanagar Gas Ltd. with 20 stations. Other entities such as Avantika Gas Ltd., Bengal Gas Company Ltd., Central UP Gas Ltd., Goa Natural Gas Pvt Ltd., Green Gas Ltd., Haridwar Natural Gas Ltd., Purba Bharati Gas Ltd., Rajasthan State Gas Pvt Ltd., Tripura Natural Gas Company Ltd., and Vadodara Gas Ltd. have also contributed to the expansion of CNG stations.

Enhancing Access to Natural Gas

These newly inaugurated CNG stations will play a vital role in promoting the use of CNG as a cleaner fuel option, reducing dependence on conventional fuels, and improving air quality. Moreover, upon completion of the ongoing CGD development in geographical areas awarded under the 12th bidding round of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board, a significant portion of India's population and geographical area will gain access to natural gas.

India's First Small-Scale LNG Unit

In line with its commitment to innovation in the natural gas value chain, GAIL has established India's first small-scale LNG unit at its Vijaipur LPG plant. This SSLNG technology holds immense potential in connecting isolated sources and consumers who are yet to be integrated into the natural gas pipeline network.

GAIL's Contribution to Natural Gas Infrastructure

GAIL group companies have made substantial contributions to India's natural gas infrastructure. They account for approximately 40% of CNG stations and an impressive 64% of PNG connections in the country, demonstrating their dedication to expanding access to clean and efficient energy sources.

The inauguration of 201 CNG stations and India's first small-scale LNG unit marks a significant milestone in the country's efforts to promote the use of natural gas as a cleaner and more sustainable fuel. These initiatives align with India's commitment to reducing carbon emissions and transitioning towards a greener economy.
