Amidst the sweltering heat wave conditions sweeping across the country, India's thermal power plants maintain a robust coal stockpile of over 45 million tonnes (MT), ensuring an uninterrupted power supply to meet the soaring demand. The nation's peak power demand recently hit a record high of 250 gigawatts (GW) on Thursday, highlighting the critical importance of maintaining adequate coal reserves. Compared to the previous year, current coal stocks are 30% higher, showcasing a significant improvement in energy preparedness.

The average daily depletion of coal at these thermal power plants has been remarkably low, at only 10,000 tonnes per day. This achievement is attributed to smooth and efficient logistic arrangements for coal supply, facilitated by a dedicated sub-group comprising representatives from the ministries of Power, Coal, Railways, and power generating companies. This collaborative effort has played a pivotal role in sustaining an efficient supply chain for the sector.
With over 100 MT of coal stockpiled at mine pit-heads, the sector is well-prepared for the upcoming demands. The Ministry of Railways has significantly contributed to this readiness by ensuring a 9% average growth in the daily availability of railway rakes for coal transportation. Moreover, the evacuation of coal through coastal shipping has witnessed substantial growth. This diversification from traditional routes has included the utilization of Dhamra and Gangavaran ports, in addition to Paradip Port, under a coordinated coal logistics policy.
The infrastructural improvements within the railway network have notably accelerated the movement of rakes from Son Nagar to Dadri. This enhancement has more than doubled the turnaround time for coal transportation, ensuring faster and more efficient delivery to thermal power plants.
Preparations for Monsoon Season
As the rainy season approaches, the Coal Ministry is taking proactive steps to ensure that thermal power plants have sufficient coal reserves. It is anticipated that by July 1, more than 42 MT of coal will be available at thermal power plants, preparing them to meet energy demands without disruption during the monsoon.
Coal India plays a crucial role in this preparedness, accounting for over 80% of domestic coal supply. This strategic planning and coordination among various ministries and agencies underscore India's commitment to maintaining energy security and meeting its citizens' power needs even under challenging conditions.
The collective efforts in enhancing logistic operations and infrastructure have evidently paid off, positioning India to effectively manage its energy requirements through efficient coal supply chains. As the country continues to navigate through peak demand periods and seasonal challenges, these measures ensure a stable and reliable power supply, reinforcing the resilience of India's energy sector.
