Cochin Airport Authorized to Import Drugs and Cosmetics, Boosts Kerala's Trade

The Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) at Nedumbassery has recently been granted permission by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to import medicines and cosmetics. This significant development positions the airport as one of the 11 airports across India with such a facility. The authorization came through an amendment in the Drugs and Cosmetics Act of 1940, marking a pivotal shift in how life-saving drugs and essential medications can now be imported into the country.

Cochin Airports New Import Role

Previously, the importation of drugs and cosmetics through Cochin Airport was highly restricted, with only limited quantities allowed under special permissions. This recent approval from the ministry, however, opens up new avenues for large stockists to directly import these items through Cochin Airport, significantly streamlining the process. Until this point, cosmetics, in particular, were predominantly imported by sea or via other airports outside Kerala. This change is expected to greatly benefit the region's pharmaceutical and cosmetic sectors.

In the fiscal year 2023-24, CIAL reported handling a total cargo volume of 63,642 metric tonnes, with international cargo accounting for 44,000 metric tonnes of this figure. For over two decades, CIAL and its subsidiary Cochin Duty Free have relied on maritime shipping for the importation of high-volume consignments of drugs and cosmetics. The airport's new status as an authorized import hub is anticipated to significantly enhance its operational capabilities and efficiency in handling such consignments.

The journey to this milestone involved persistent efforts by CIAL, which had raised concerns with the union government on multiple occasions regarding its exclusion from the list of authorized airports for drug and cosmetic imports. The recent approval from the Centre is a testament to these efforts and is expected to have a positive impact on the availability of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics in Kerala and beyond.

This development not only underscores CIAL's growing importance in India's aviation sector but also highlights its role in facilitating more efficient supply chains for critical health-related products. With Cochin Airport now among the select airports authorized for such imports, it stands to play a crucial role in meeting the region's healthcare needs more effectively.
