On December 31, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways extended the date to switch to complete toll collection via FASTags to February 15, 2021. Earlier the deadline was January 1, 2021.

And accordingly the note to NHAI said that it can obtain any approval required to complete transit to FASTag mechanism for toll collection latest by Feb 15, 2021. Also, Nitin Gadkari-led ministry has also shared a plan for the complete implementation of e-tolling from January 1, 2021. Accordingly all lanes of the toll plaza have to declared except one as FASTag lane.

As part of the plan, the government has mandated to declare all lanes except one lane in each direction as FASTag lane. Also, the notification released in November made installation of FASTag mandatory for all vehicles sold before December 1, 2017 via amendments in Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.

FASTags were launched in the year 2016 and four banks jointly issued 1 lakh tags. The government has also made valid FASTag mandatory while getting a new third-party insurance through an amendment in FORM 51 (certificate of insurance), wherein the details of FASTag ID shall be captured. This shall be applicable from April 1, 2021.

Also, it is mandatory for registration of all 4-wheelers with effect from December 1, 2017.
