Consumer Protection Authority probing 20 IAS coaching centres for misleading advertisements

The Consumer Protection Authority of India (CCPA) is investigating 20 IAS coaching centres for allegedly misleading advertisements and unfair trade practices. The centres are accused of using the names and pictures of toppers and successful candidates to influence prospective aspirants.

Notices Issued

The CCPA has issued notices to 20 coaching institutes, including Vajirao & Reddy Institute, Chahal Academy, Khan Study Group IAS, A Plus, Analog IAS, Shankar IAS, Srirams IAS, BYJUs IAS, Unacademy, NEXT IAS, Drishti IAS, IQRA IAS, Vision IAS, IAS Baba, Yojana IAS, Plutus IAS, ALS IAS, Raus IAS Study Circle and Dhishti IAS.

Penalty Imposed

The CCPA has imposed a penalty of Rs 1 lakh each on three centres -- Raus IAS Study Circle, Chahal Academy, and IQRA IAS. IAS Baba has got a stay order on the CCPA notice. Raus IAS Study Circle has filed an appealed against the order in the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission NCDRC.

Misleading Advertisements

The notices have been issued for allegedly concealing important information about successful students. The CCPA said that coaching institutes often claim the same rank holder as their student by deliberately concealing important information. The successful candidate might have taken coaching in multiple institutes for different subjects, and for prelim or main exams.

Wastage of Time and Money

The CCPA said that prospective students get enrolled in coaching institutes based on misleading advertisements and end up wasting their time and money. The authority said that proper disclosures about the courses undertaken by successful students with an institute are important to protect the interest of prospective aspirants.

The CCPA's investigation into coaching centres is a step towards protecting the rights of prospective students. The authority's actions will help in curbing misleading advertisements and unfair trade practices in the coaching industry.
