COVID Update December 25, 2023: Active Caseload In India Breaches 4000 Mark, Kerala Leads With 3128 Cases

With a single day jump of 312 new COVID-19 cases, India currently has an active caseload of 4054 cases as per the available on the website of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The data updated at 8 am showed on the website showed that Kerala is the top contributor to the rising cases with a caseload of 3128 cases. 128 new cases have been reported in the state since yesterday, with 1 death in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Kerala's neighboring state Karnataka has reported 73 fresh cases, taking the total caseload to 344. The third biggest contributor is Tamil Nadu with a total number of 132 cases, 9 reported since yesterday, as per data available on the ministry website.

Maharashtra has a total caseload of 153 cases, after 50 new COVID cases have been reported since yesterday.
According to the news agency PTI citing sources, 63 cases of COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 were reported in the country till Sunday, including 34 detected in Goa. Nine cases have been detected from Maharashtra, eight from Karnataka, six from Kerala, four from Tamil Nadu, and two from Telangana, they added.

In a letter to the states and Union territories last week, Union Health Secretary Sudhansh Pant highlighted the critical COVID-19 control-and-management strategies and advised them to put in place the requisite public health measures to reduce the risk of increase in the transmission of the disease.

The global health body World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the variant JN.1 as a separate variant of interest (VOI) from the parent lineage BA.2.86. It was earlier classified as VOI as part of BA.2.86 sublineages. The WHO has underscored that the overall risk associated with JN.1 is currently considered low based on available evidence.
