The Maharashtra government has granted agriculture status to the livestock sector, facilitating rural entrepreneurship by improving access to loans and subsidies. This initiative aims to enhance animal husbandry as a sustainable employment source.
The Maharashtra government's decision to classify the livestock sector as agriculture is expected to boost rural entrepreneurship. This change will facilitate easier access to loans and subsidies, according to Animal Husbandry Minister Pankaja Munde. Speaking at the Maha Livestock Expo 2026 in Parli Vaijnath, Munde highlighted that this move will allow livestock farmers to secure credit at agricultural rates and benefit from a 50% subsidy for animal husbandry activities.

Efforts are being made to develop animal husbandry into a comprehensive industry. Munde emphasised the importance of community involvement in making the sector a sustainable source of rural employment. Proposals for establishing animal husbandry colleges in Baramati and Parli Vaijnath have been approved, thanks to Ajit Pawar's initiative. Munde paid tribute to Pawar, who died in a plane crash on January 28, noting his appreciation for the exhibition's scale.
Expo Highlights New Technologies
The expo features livestock from across India, including various breeds of cows, bulls, horses, and goats. Several bird species are also showcased in specially designed pavilions. A notable attraction is what organisers claim to be the country's smallest cow. The event highlights new technologies in animal husbandry, productivity-enhancing solutions, and veterinary medicines.
Experts are conducting guidance sessions and lectures for farmers and entrepreneurs at the expo. These sessions aim to provide valuable insights into improving productivity and adopting innovative practices in animal husbandry. Officials have confirmed that Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is scheduled to visit the exhibition on Saturday.
A separate pavilion at the venue honours Ajit Pawar's memory. The pavilion serves as a tribute to his contributions and vision for the sector. The exhibition aims to inspire attendees by showcasing advancements and opportunities within the livestock industry.
The event underscores the potential for transforming animal husbandry into a thriving industry. By facilitating access to financial resources and promoting technological advancements, the initiative seeks to empower rural communities. The government's support is crucial in driving this transformation and ensuring sustainable growth in the sector.
