The Geological Survey of India (GSI) clarified that exploration activities, such as those for potash, are determined by scientific criteria, geological data, and economic feasibility rather than regional preferences. This statement was made to counter a newspaper report alleging that the Punjab government accused the Centre of bias for not exploring potash in Punjab despite its significant deposits.

GSI has been actively exploring potash in Punjab as part of its broader national strategy. The potash formations in Punjab are part of the Nagaur-Ganganagar Evaporite Basin (NGEB), which primarily lies in Rajasthan but extends into Punjab. Since 1985-86, GSI has conducted five reconnaissance G4 stage exploration projects in Ferozepur, Sri Muktsar Sahib, and Fazilka districts.
Potash Exploration Projects
These studies revealed potash mineralisation at depths between 630 and 770 metres, often found with halite, clay, and dolomite. Two new G4 stage exploration projects have been initiated in the Rajpura-Rajawali and Gidranwali-Azimgarh blocks in Fazilka district. These projects cover 128 sq km with drilling planned across six boreholes totalling 5,100 metres.
The decision to start these projects came after a request from the Punjab government during the Central Geological Programming Board's 64th meeting in January at Bhubaneswar. This demonstrates GSI's responsiveness to state-level inputs. Currently, exploration work is ongoing in these blocks, and if results are promising, GSI may advance these projects to G3 and G2 stages.
Commitment to Mineral Development
In addition to potash exploration, GSI is conducting gravity-magnetic surveys under its National Geophysical Mapping Programme (NGPM) to identify mineralised zones. This is crucial as the region is largely covered by thick soil and quaternary sediments. GSI remains committed to supporting mineral development across all Indian states, including Punjab.
The agency emphasises that scientific exploration is driven by geological evidence and resource viability aligned with national priorities. It urges stakeholders to understand that such endeavours are technical processes based on scientific merit rather than regional biases.
GSI's ongoing efforts include integrating Punjab into its national exploration strategy regularly. This approach ensures that all states benefit from mineral development initiatives based on scientific assessments and strategic planning.
