The Delhi government has rolled out the Atal Canteen Scheme, providing full meals for just Rs 5 to underprivileged residents across the national capital. Currently, 45 canteens are operational, and officials have announced that this network will expand to 100 outlets within the next 15-20 days. The initiative was launched on the 101st birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, after whom the scheme is named.

The Atal Canteen scheme aims to tackle food insecurity in urban areas by offering affordable, nutritious meals to people living in low-income settlements and densely populated neighbourhoods. According to officials, access to reasonably priced, wholesome food remains limited for many workers and families in big cities, making the Atal Canteen Scheme a critical intervention.

The first phase of the Atal Canteen Scheme was inaugurated at a canteen near Apna Bazaar in Nehru Nagar, Lajpat Nagar. The launch event was led jointly by Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood. They also confirmed that an additional 55 canteens will open soon, bringing the total to 100 outlets across the city.

Delhi Atal Canteen Menu and Timings

Each Atal Canteen will serve lunch from 11:30 am to 2 pm and dinner from 6:30 pm to 9 pm. A standard plate weighs around 600 grams and includes roti, dal, seasonal vegetables, rice, and pickle, all at a cost of just Rs 5. Food experts estimate that a single meal provides approximately 700-800 calories and 20-25 grams of protein.

The Delhi government has allocated Rs 104.24 crore for the project. Each canteen is expected to serve around 1,000 meals daily, reaching over one lakh residents across the capital every day.
