Because of the rising temperatures authorities are concerned over student safety and the Directorate of Education (DoE) has released a detailed Delhi heatwave advisory for schools. These safety measures are mandatory across all government, aided, and private institutions.

Delhi heatwave advisory 2026: What Schools Must Follow

According to the latest Delhi school heatwave guidelines, authorities have introduced strict protocols to protect students from heat-related illnesses.

Water bell system introduced

Schools have been directed to implement a "water bell system", where a bell will ring every 45-60 minutes reminding students to stay hydrated. It will reduce the risk of dehydration during peak summer conditions.

No outdoor activities, assemblies curtailed

Under the Delhi heatwave school advisory, all outdoor physical activities have been completely restricted. Morning assemblies must either be cancelled or conducted in indoor or shaded areas for a short duration. Schools have also been told not to conduct any open-air classes.

Buddy system for student safety

Schools are encouraged to introduce a buddy system, where students are paired to keep a check on each other's health during school hours.

Awareness campaigns and IEC material

Schools must conduct awareness sessions on heatwave safety, educating students about hydration, preventive steps, and symptoms of heat stress. Additionally, IEC materials provided by the health department must be displayed prominently across campuses.

Parent-Teacher Communication

Teachers are required to regularly update parents with IMD weather alerts and safety guidelines. Schools must also submit an Action Taken Report by May 2, 2026, confirming compliance with the advisory.

Heatwave in Delhi: Symptoms and Precautions

Officials have warned students and parents to watch out for heat stress symptoms, including dizziness, nausea, muscle cramps, confusion, and high body temperature. Immediate first aid includes moving to a cool place, drinking water, loosening tight clothing, and seeking medical help if symptoms persist.
