Delhi Metro Alert: 45 Stations to Shut Entry and Exit Gates From 9 PM Tonight Ahead of October 10 Protests

Delhi Metro commuters should prepare for major access restrictions across Central, North, East and South Delhi from 9 pm on October 9, after the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced gate closures at 45 stations ahead of planned protests in the capital on October 10.

The restrictions have been ordered on the advice of Delhi Police, which flagged planned gatherings at Jantar Mantar and other locations in the New Delhi district. Entry and exit gates at the affected stations will remain closed until further notice, though interchange facilities will continue at all listed stations except New Delhi Metro station.

Delhi Metro Alert

For office-goers, traders, railway passengers, airport-bound travellers and market visitors, the advisory could mean longer travel times, last-mile disruptions and higher dependence on road transport. The curbs cover several high-footfall stations, including Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, Kashmere Gate, New Delhi, Mandi House and Hauz Khas.

Why Delhi Metro restrictions are being imposed
Delhi Police sought preventive measures because of expected protest-related movement towards sensitive locations in the national capital. In its communication to DMRC, the police asked the Metro operator to close entry and exit gates at identified stations and consider reducing train frequency through them, depending on the situation.

The police advisory said protests were planned at Jantar Mantar and other points in New Delhi district on October 10. Security agencies are expected to review the ground situation before deciding whether the restrictions should be relaxed, extended or modified during the day.

DMRC has clarified that interchange will be allowed at most affected stations. This means passengers already inside the Metro system may be able to change lines at these stations, even if they cannot enter or exit there. The exception is New Delhi Metro station, where interchange facilities will not be available during the restriction period.

Full list of affected Delhi Metro stations
The 45 stations named for entry and exit restrictions include several stations close to government offices, court complexes, commercial areas, university zones, old city markets and key interchange points. Passengers should check the nearest alternative station before starting their journey.

Area or corridor Stations where entry and exit will remain closed
Central Delhi and New Delhi Janpath, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, Lok Kalyan Marg, Rajiv Chowk, New Delhi, Seva Teerth, Mandi House, Barakhamba Road, ITO, Delhi Gate, Khan Market, Supreme Court, Indraprastha, Shivaji Stadium
West and north Delhi Ramakrishna Ashram Marg, Jhandewalan, Karol Bagh, Rajendra Place, Vishwavidyalaya, Kashmere Gate, Inderlok, Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar, Netaji Subhash Place, Azadpur, Jahangirpuri, Haiderpur Badli Mor, Majlis Park, Rithala
South and south-east Delhi Dilli Haat-INA, Hauz Khas, Jor Bagh, Lajpat Nagar, Jangpura, Ashram, Jamia Millia Islamia
Old Delhi and east Delhi Chawri Bazar, Jama Masjid, Seelampur, Maujpur-Babarpur, Jafrabad, Welcome, Yamuna Vihar, Khajuri Khas, Shahdara
The inclusion of Rajiv Chowk, Kashmere Gate, Central Secretariat, Hauz Khas and New Delhi is significant because these stations serve as major interchange or access points. Even where interchange remains operational, crowd control measures may slow movement inside stations.

What commuters should do on October 9 and 10
Passengers travelling after 9 pm on October 9, or through October 10, should not assume normal access at the listed stations. Those heading to railway stations, markets, offices, hospitals, courts or airports should build additional time into their journeys and keep alternate road options ready.

Travellers using New Delhi railway station need to be especially careful because New Delhi Metro station is part of the restricted list and interchange will not be available there. Depending on the final security arrangements, passengers may need to use nearby stations, taxis, auto-rickshaws or buses for last-mile travel.

Businesses in Connaught Place, ITO, Karol Bagh, Old Delhi, Lajpat Nagar and other commercial areas may also see reduced footfall if access remains limited through the day. Employees working late shifts should coordinate return travel in advance, especially if they depend on Metro connectivity after office hours.

DMRC advisories are usually updated through official channels as operational decisions change. Passengers should check announcements before leaving, rather than relying only on older messages or forwarded social media posts. The Delhi Metro Police Control Room numbers mentioned in the advisory are 22183903, 8745001709 and 6828400576.
