Delhi-NCR 3-Day Strike: Taxis, Auto Unions Start Protest From May 21-23; What Is Open & Closed Today?

The All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) commenced its three-day strike in Delhi-NCR from May 21, 2026. This statewide protest is expected to end on May 23. The reason behind the protest is the latest fuel price hike, the Delhi government's hike on environment compensation cess on commercial vehicles and taxi fares, which have not increased in the last 15 years. At least 68 transport unions under AIMTC are protesting.

Delhi-NCR Strike:

AIMTC is the apex union of truck, private bus, taxi and maxi cab drivers. At least 68 transport associations and unions are carrying out state-wide protests across regions of Delhi-NCR. The United Front of All Transport Associations (UFTA) has announced their support for the protests, which are called as 'Chakka Jam'. Notably, about 4 lakh taxi operators are joining the strike.

A statement from AIMTC said, "More than 68 transport associations and unions across Delhi NCR have come together under the banner of AIMTC and have decided to suspend their transport operations for three days from May 21 to May 23 in Delhi-NCR against the unjust and unfair policies imposed by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), courts and the Delhi government on the transport sector."

Chaalak Shakti Union vice president Anuj Kumar Rathore reportedly pointed out that taxi fares have been unchanged for the last 15 years, while CNG rates have witnessed continuous hikes. And despite the repeated discussions and appeals, he accused the Delhi government of having ignored their pleas.

A driver pointed out that in the current inflation, it has become impossible to run a household. Meanwhile, drivers expressed that amidst mounting annual expenses like vehicle fitness certificates, insurance and permits, incomes are not sustainable to run households or feed families.

Among the key demands are the following:

1. Hike In Taxi Fares

2. Pullback in Enhanced Congestion Charges (ECC)

3. Reconsideration of restrictions imposed on commercial vehicles.

The unions have warned that if demands are not met within next two weeks, their protests will be intensified.
