Extreme Summer Heat Leads to Sharp Decline in Delhi-NCR Restaurant Business

As Delhi-NCR grapples with an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring past 40 degrees Celsius, the restaurant industry faces a significant downturn. The scorching summer of 2024 has led to a sharp decline in foot traffic, particularly during lunch hours, causing an estimated 25% drop in business for non-mall restaurants. Some establishments report losses nearing 40%. Rahul Arora, owner of The Big Tree Cafe in Gurgaon, highlights the struggle as his al-fresco dining venue sees a drastic reduction in patrons, attributing a 40% business loss directly to the extreme heat.

Restaurants Hit Hard by Summer 24 Heat

Record-breaking temperatures have been noted across the region, with Safdarjung Observatory recording a day's maximum of 46.8 degrees Celsius on May 29, marking a 79-year high. This unprecedented heatwave has not only affected daytime dining but also altered consumer behavior, with many opting to stay indoors or order food online. Manpreet Singh, treasurer of the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) and a restaurant owner himself, confirms the widespread impact on the industry.

In response to the dwindling footfall, restaurants are adapting by offering attractive discounts, revamping menus with summer-friendly dishes, and enhancing outdoor cooling systems. Anardana, a casual dining chain, has introduced a plant-based summer menu featuring cool mango beverages to entice customers. Despite these efforts, the heatwave poses a significant challenge to the sector.

Food delivery personnel are also feeling the brunt of the heatwave. With temperatures making daytime deliveries particularly challenging, they face health risks and operational difficulties. In light of this, food aggregator Zomato made an unusual appeal to customers to refrain from ordering during peak afternoon hours. This move sparked debate but also highlighted the need for innovative solutions to support delivery staff during extreme weather conditions.

However, it's not all bleak for the food industry. Restaurants located within air-conditioned malls have seen an uptick in evening footfall as people seek refuge from the heat. Outlets like Birch at Pacific Mall and Bira 91 Taproom report increased sales during these times. Rahul Singh of Bira 91 notes that despite the adverse conditions, their mall-based outlets have experienced their best May yet and anticipate continued success into June.

The summer of 2024 serves as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions on businesses and individuals alike. While some sectors struggle to adapt, others find opportunities amidst adversity. As Delhi-NCR continues to navigate this heatwave, the resilience and ingenuity of its people and businesses shine through.
