Delhi is heading into a busy week of changing weather as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns of sharp fluctuations in temperature and visibility. A new western disturbance is becoming active over the western Himalayan region, which is expected to influence Delhi NCR's weather from December 31.
Partly cloudy skies are likely on New Year's Eve and light to moderate rainfall may occur in some areas on January 1, potentially impacting outdoor celebrations.

IMD officials have stated that the western disturbance will start impacting the western Himalayan region from December 30. The system is then likely to reach adjoining plains, including Delhi, by December 31. This may trigger light rain or drizzle across the capital and nearby areas. Residents should be prepared for intermittent wet weather during the first day of 2026.
Delhi AQI Today: Very Poor Air Quality in Delhi-NCR
In addition to fog and cold conditions, the air quality in Delhi-NCR has been recorded in the very poor category, raising health concerns for residents. The IMD and pollution control authorities have urged people to limit outdoor activities and wear protective masks if stepping outside.

The advisory specifically mentions Uttar Pradesh as being at high risk, with visibility expected to drop significantly during early mornings and late nights.
Apart from Uttar Pradesh, similar dense fog conditions are likely to affect Bihar, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab. The IMD has also predicted dense fog in parts of North East India, Odisha, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Uttarakhand over the same period.
