Delhi witnessed a sudden and intense shift in weather conditions on Monday as a powerful dust storm accompanied by strong winds swept across the national capital, disrupting daily movement and raising safety concerns for commuters, businesses and air travellers.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for thunderstorms, lightning and rain, warning of volatile weather conditions through the afternoon and evening hours.

According to IMD observations, wind intensity increased rapidly across several parts of the city. The Palam weather station recorded wind speeds of 50 knots, approximately 92 kmph, around 2:30 pm, highlighting the severity of the storm system.

The department warned that gusty winds between 70-90 kmph were highly likely across Delhi, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning activity and light to moderate rainfall. In several regions, wind speeds were expected to remain in the 60-70 kmph range, with occasional gusts reaching up to 80 kmph.

The affected zones included South-East, East, Central, North-East, South, South-West, West, North-West and North Delhi, along with New Delhi and Shahdara. The IMD said the system had the potential to disrupt road traffic, metro access points, outdoor work and even temporary structures due to high wind intensity.

The severe weather conditions also affected air travel, prompting airlines to issue advisories for passengers as operations at Delhi airport faced disruptions due to strong winds and rainfall.

Air India issued a travel advisory on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "Adverse weather conditions may impact flight operations to and from Delhi. To ensure a smooth travel experience, we encourage our passengers to check the latest flight status at the following link before heading to the airport," the airline said, urging travellers to verify flight updates before departure.

IndiGo also informed passengers that flight operations had been impacted due to adverse weather conditions in Delhi amid the IMD red alert. In its post on X, the airline said:
"Due to adverse weather conditions in Delhi, flight operations are impacted."

The airline further advised passengers to check their flight status before leaving for the airport and acknowledged possible inconvenience due to delays. It said, "We understand that extended wait times, both on the ground and onboard, may cause inconvenience, and we sincerely appreciate your patience. Airport operations continued, but officials noted that strong winds and rain can slow down ground handling, baggage movement and aircraft turnaround, occasionally leading to delays or diversions.

For Tuesday, June 16, 2026, the weather department has predicted a partial easing of conditions, although instability is expected to continue. The forecast indicates a partly cloudy sky with spells of very light to light rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph during afternoon and evening hours.

Over the next week, the maximum temperature may increase by 4-6 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature could rise by 3-5 degrees Celsius, signalling a return of warmer conditions in the capital.

Meanwhile, attention is now turning toward the southwest monsoon, which is expected to arrive in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) between June 25 and June 30, 2026.
