Delhi Weather Today: IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Rain, Thunderstorms & Gusty Winds; Prediction for June 12-13

After days of scorching heat, the national capital is witnessing cooler temperatures and intermittent rainfall on Thursday, bringing much-needed relief to residents. Delhi residents are set for another dramatic change in weather, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert and warning of thunderstorms, lightning, rain and strong winds over the next two days.

Delhi Weather Today: Thunderstorms, Rain and Strong Winds Likely Tonight

Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly across parts of Delhi as a powerful weather system moving from neighbouring Haryana advances towards the capital. According to IMD, satellite imagery has detected a large cloud mass associated with thunderstorms and rainfall heading towards Delhi-NCR, increasing the likelihood of sudden weather activity during the night.

Authorities have also issued an "extremely severe" weather warning for some areas, cautioning that intense thunderstorms could develop within a short span of time. Wind speeds may reach 70-90 kmph, with gusts potentially touching 100 kmph in isolated locations. Lightning strikes, moderate to heavy rainfall and even hailstorm activity cannot be ruled out. Residents have been advised to stay indoors during severe weather conditions and avoid open areas during lightning activity.

IMD Weather Alert: Weather Department Issues Yellow Alert in Delhi for June 12

For Friday, June 12, the IMD has forecast a generally cloudy sky with multiple spells of rain and thunderstorms throughout the day. Weather officials expect very light to light rainfall accompanied by lightning and strong winds reaching 40-50 kmph, with gusts of up to 60 kmph.

The first spell of rain and thunderstorm activity is likely during the morning and forenoon hours, while another round of showers and gusty winds may develop during the afternoon and evening. As cloud cover increases and rainfall activity intensifies, temperatures are expected to drop significantly compared to recent days.

Delhi's maximum temperature is likely to settle between 34°C and 36°C on June 12, providing considerable relief from the intense heatwave-like conditions witnessed earlier this week.

Delhi Weather Prediction for June 13

The pleasant weather pattern is expected to continue on Saturday, June 13. According to IMD forecasts, Delhi will experience a partly cloudy sky with chances of very light to light rainfall during the afternoon and evening hours.

Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph, are also expected during the day. Temperatures are likely to remain comfortable, with the maximum expected between 35°C and 37°C, much lower than the 40°C-plus temperatures recorded recently.

Delhi Rains Today Bring Relief From Heat

The upcoming spell of rain is expected to bring substantial relief from the scorching summer heat that has gripped Delhi-NCR over the past several days. Frequent cloud cover, moisture-laden winds and scattered showers are likely to keep daytime temperatures in check and improve overall weather conditions across the region.

Meteorologists believe the combination of thunderstorms and rainfall will help suppress dust levels and reduce heat stress, although humidity levels may remain elevated at times.

El Nino By June-August 2026; Raises Concerns Over Monsoon in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad & Other Regions

While Delhi is likely to benefit from short-term rainfall activity, weather experts are keeping a close watch on a rapidly strengthening El Nino event. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has confirmed that a strong El Nino is developing and could significantly influence global weather patterns between June and August 2026.

According to projections supported by the India Meteorological Department, India may receive below-normal monsoon rainfall this season, with overall precipitation estimated at around 90% of the long-period average. Such conditions are often associated with weaker monsoon activity across several parts of the country.

Major metropolitan cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, could experience lower-than-normal rainfall during the monsoon months if El Nino strengthens further. However, parts of northeastern India are expected to remain relatively less affected by the developing weather phenomenon.
