After a prolonged spell of hot and humid weather, Delhi is finally seeing signs of sustained rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast intermittent rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds across the national capital over the coming days, with wet weather likely to persist until July 9.

While the showers are expected to bring temporary relief from the sticky conditions that have gripped the city, weather experts say a bigger concern continues to loom over the rest of the monsoon season. El Nino conditions are strengthening, raising fresh questions over whether rainfall could remain below normal in many parts of the country despite the recent improvement.

Delhi Weather Today: IMD Issues Yellow Alert as Rain, Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds Begin in Noida, Gurugram & Across NCR

Several areas of Delhi received light rainfall on Saturday afternoon, bringing a brief respite from the oppressive humidity. However, the relief remained limited as moisture levels stayed high, making conditions uncomfortable for much of the day.

According to the IMD, the city's morning humidity was recorded at 77%, while cloudy skies dominated throughout the day.

The weather department has issued a Yellow Alert, warning of light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across Delhi.

The IMD expects rain activity to be fairly widespread, covering most parts of the capital.

According to the latest IMD forecast, Delhi is likely to experience a series of wet days over the next week, with temperatures remaining below the seasonal peak due to persistent cloud cover.

The IMD expects generally cloudy skies with very light to light rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph, which could briefly increase to 50 kmph during the morning and forenoon. Temperatures are likely to remain between 32°C and 34°C, with minimum temperatures around 27-29°C.

Delhi Weather Prediction July 6 (Monday)

Cloudy conditions are expected to continue. The forecast indicates another spell of very light to light rain, while isolated locations could witness moderate showers. Thunderstorms and lightning are likely both during the morning and again towards the evening. Maximum temperatures may settle around 31-33°C, while minimum temperatures could range between 26°C and 28°C.

The weather is expected to remain cloudy with light rain and thunderstorms, mainly during the forenoon and afternoon. Daytime temperatures are likely to stay between 30°C and 32°C, with nighttime temperatures around 25-27°C.

The IMD forecasts generally cloudy skies along with very light to light rainfall, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours. Temperatures are expected to remain between 30°C and 32°C, while minimum temperatures may range from 24°C to 26°C.

Cloud cover is expected to persist, with the possibility of very light rain, thunderstorms and lightning during the forenoon and afternoon. Maximum temperatures are likely to remain between 30°C and 32°C, while minimum temperatures could dip slightly to 23-25°C, making it one of the coolest mornings of the week.

Delhi Rain Brings Relief, But Humidity May Continue

Although rainfall is expected to reduce daytime temperatures, residents may not experience complete relief immediately.

Weather experts say intermittent showers often increase atmospheric moisture, keeping humidity levels elevated even as temperatures decline. This can make outdoor conditions feel warmer than the thermometer indicates until heavier and more sustained rainfall arrives.

El Nino Could Be the Biggest Threat to India's Monsoon This Year?

The improving weather in Delhi comes against the backdrop of a challenging monsoon season nationally.

Meteorologists note that for the first time since 2021, the southwest monsoon's advance slowed significantly during July as El Nino began influencing atmospheric circulation. At the same time, a summer western disturbance interacted with the advancing monsoon, creating unusual rainfall patterns across parts of north India.

The IMD has indicated that El Nino conditions are expected to strengthen further during the season, a development that often suppresses rainfall over large parts of the Indian subcontinent. Because of this, the department has projected below-normal seasonal rainfall, estimating precipitation at around 90% of the long-period average.

Fifth Direst June After 125 Years Since 1901 in India

The impact of weak monsoon activity is already evident in rainfall data.

June 2026 became India's fifth-driest June since 1901, with nationwide rainfall ending the month 39% below normal.

Delhi also experienced a noticeable shortfall. The Safdarjung Observatory, the city's primary weather station, recorded only 41.8 mm of rainfall during June, well below the normal 74.1 mm expected for the month.

The deficit has delayed the build-up of soil moisture in several regions and increased concerns for agriculture if rainfall does not improve during the core monsoon months.
