The IMD has also warned that a gradual rise in maximum temperatures of about 3-5°C is expected across large parts of northwest India until May 21, after which conditions are likely to remain steady for a couple of days.

A heatwave is officially declared when the maximum temperature exceeds 40°C and is at least 4.5°C above the normal level. It can also be declared when temperatures reach 45°C or higher, regardless of the deviation from average conditions. A severe heatwave is recorded when the departure from normal exceeds 6.5°C, indicating extreme stress on public health and infrastructure.

The IMD further notes that a heatwave is confirmed only when such conditions are observed at a minimum of two stations within a meteorological subdivision for two consecutive days, with the official declaration made on the second day.
