What Happens During Snana Yatra?
The day's rituals begin with the magnificent Pahandi procession, during which Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra are ceremoniously carried from the Ratna Simhasana to the sacred Snana Bedi, the bathing platform inside the Jagannath Temple complex.
The deities are then bathed with 108 pitchers of sacred water drawn from a specially protected temple well. The water is infused with fragrant herbs, sandalwood, flowers and aromatic ingredients while priests perform elaborate Vedic rituals amid the sound of conch shells, temple bells and devotional chants.
Following the sacred bath, the deities are adorned in the unique Hati Besha (Elephant Attire), a rare and highly revered form in which Lord Jagannath resembles Lord Ganesha. This special appearance is witnessed only once every year and attracts thousands of devotees to Puri.
Why Is Deva Snana Purnima So Significant?
According to Jagannath Temple traditions, the ritual dates back to King Indradyumna, who is believed to have initiated the ceremonial bathing after installing the sacred idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra.
Spiritually, the festival represents cleansing, renewal and the Lord's compassion towards devotees. It is widely believed that receiving darshan of the deities on Snana Purnima brings divine blessings and helps devotees attain spiritual purification.
The festival also serves as the ceremonial beginning of preparations for the grand Jagannath Rath Yatra, one of India's largest and most celebrated religious events.
Anavasara After Snana Yatra
Immediately after the ceremonial bath, the deities are believed to develop a fever due to the elaborate bathing ritual. They are then moved into a special period of seclusion known as Anavasara, which lasts for approximately 15 days.
During this time, public darshan remains suspended while temple priests perform traditional healing rituals and special pujas inside the temple. Devotees eagerly await the end of Anavasara, when the deities reappear in rejuvenated form before embarking on the world-famous Rath Yatra.
