The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a new regulation requiring at least 25% of airport personnel involved in safety-sensitive tasks to undergo daily breathalyzer tests. This measure aims to enhance safety and prevent alcohol-related incidents in the aviation industry.
In a significant move to enhance safety in the aviation sector, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has made it mandatory for at least 25% of air traffic controllers, aircraft maintenance engineers, and personnel engaged in safety-sensitive work at airports to undergo a breath analyzer test daily.

Increased Testing Percentage
Previously, only 10% of these personnel were required to undergo breath analyzer tests, but the DGCA has now increased this percentage to 25% to ensure stricter monitoring and compliance.
Accurate Equipment
To ensure accurate results, only fuel cell technology-based breath analyzer equipment will be allowed for conducting the tests. These devices are considered more precise and reliable in detecting alcohol consumption.
Effective Implementation
The revised Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) in this regard will come into effect after three months, providing adequate time for the aviation industry to enhance the existing infrastructure for breath analyzer tests at various airports.
Enhanced Safety Measures
The DGCA stated that this revision in the CAR aims to further enhance the level of safety in the aviation sector, particularly in light of the increasing air traffic and ground movements at airports.
By implementing these stricter measures, the DGCA is taking proactive steps to ensure that airport personnel are fit for duty and that safety standards are upheld at all times. This move is expected to contribute to the overall safety and efficiency of the Indian aviation industry.
