DGCA Steps In: New SOPs to Tackle Fog-Induced Flight Chaos

Amidst flight delays and cancellations caused by dense fog, DGCA intervenes with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure airlines provide accurate real-time information and enhance communication with passengers.

In response to the recent fog-related disruptions at airports, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a set of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure better communication and facilitation of passengers. The aviation watchdog has directed airlines to publish accurate real-time information regarding flight delays and sensitize their staff at airports to suitably communicate with passengers.

SOPs for Fog-Induced Disruptions

The SOPs issued by the DGCA aim to minimize passenger inconvenience caused by fog-induced disruptions and adverse weather conditions at airports. These procedures include:

  • Accurate Real-Time Flight Delay Information: Airlines are required to publish accurate and up-to-date information regarding flight delays on their websites and other communication channels.
  • Sensitization of Airline Staff: Airport staff should be appropriately sensitized to communicate effectively with passengers, providing continuous guidance and information about flight delays.
  • Advance Flight Cancellation: In cases where flights are anticipated to be delayed or consequentially delayed beyond three hours due to adverse weather conditions, airlines may cancel such flights sufficiently in advance to avoid congestion at airports and minimize passenger inconvenience.

Passenger Protection in Case of Flight Disruptions

The DGCA has also reminded airlines of their obligations under the Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) pertaining to facilities to be provided to passengers in case of denied boarding, flight cancellations, and flight delays. Airlines are required to publish the reference of the CAR on flight tickets to ensure passenger awareness of their rights.

The CAR was issued to provide appropriate protection for air travelers in case of flight disruptions, including denied boardings, flight cancellations, and delays without due notice. Airlines are mandatorily required to adhere to the provisions of the CAR, except in cases of Force Majeure events, which are extraordinary circumstances beyond the control of the airline.

The DGCA's SOPs and emphasis on passenger protection measures aim to enhance the overall travel experience for passengers during challenging weather conditions. By ensuring accurate communication, timely information, and adherence to passenger rights, the aviation regulator seeks to minimize inconvenience and provide a more seamless air travel experience.
