Dhanteras 2026 Significance:

Dhanteras means --- Dhan as wealth --- and 'Teras' as '13th'. As per Porekala, hence, on the 13th day of the Kartik month, Hindus worship Lord Kuber and Goddess Lakshmi with full devotion. Besides, in some regions of India, Dhanteras is celebrated as 'Dhanwantari Jayanti' that is the birth anniversary of 'Dhanwantari', who is the God of Ayurveda. Also, Dhanteras is observed two days before the celebrations of Diwali, the great Hindu festival of lights. On this day people worship Goddess Lakshmi to provide well being and prosperity. On this day the Lakshmi puja should be performed during the Pradosh Kaal that lasts for nearly 2 and a half hour after sunset.

Dhanteras 2026 Puja Vidhi

The start of Dhanteras is by worshipping Lord Dhanvantari, who is the divine physician who emerged during Samudra Manthan holding the pot of Amrit (nectar), which is worshipped first on Dhanteras for health and longevity, as per the AstroPuja website. It highlights the rituals to carry on Dhanteras:

1. Begin by invoking Lord Ganesha to remove obstacles

2. Place the Dhanvantari idol facing north or east

3. Offer water, flowers, and incense while chanting: "Om Dhanvantaraye Namaha"

4. Light a ghee lamp and offer fruits and sweets

5. Recite Dhanvantari mantras 108 times using a mala

6. Pray for family health, freedom from illness, and longevity

After Dhanvantari, pray to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera for wealth and prosperity. AstroPuja highlights the following rituals:

Place Lakshmi idol or picture in the center of puja mandap

2. Offer saffron, turmeric, and kumkum

3. Present gold/silver coins, new currency notes, or jewelry

4. Light 13 diyas (representing Trayodashi)

5. Chant Lakshmi mantras and stotras

6. Offer lotus flowers and prasad.

The 13 diyas should be lighted with mustard oil in the evening. This is a night ritual and it includes:

Firstly, place the diyas at the main entrance of your house.

2. Then light lamps in the north direction of the house, which is called as the Kubera's direction.

3. Further, do not forget to keep one diya near a tulsi plant.

4. Additionally, place diyas in all corners of your house.

The last ritual is performed in the night, facing south to honor Lord Yama. Devotees pray to the deity for protection and longevity. For praying Lord Yama, place clay diyas using sesame oil. Ensure the diyas are first placed at the main door with south facing. Then chant "Om Yamaya Namaha". Let the diyas burn through the night.
