The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) has achieved a significant milestone by completing over 50,000 door-to-door surveys. This marks the highest number in the history of Mumbai's Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA). The progress is encouraging for both survey teams and Dharavi residents, who are keen to see redevelopment advance. Their active involvement highlights their dedication to Asia's largest slum rehabilitation survey, according to a DRP official.

The survey plays a crucial role in determining eligibility for rehabilitation under the Dharavi redevelopment project. Teams are diligently working to finish this comprehensive survey. DRP CEO SVR Srinivas recently urged all Dharavi residents to participate, ensuring no one misses out on the housing plan. "If you fully consider the complexity, precision and logistical challenges of mapping Asia's largest slum, with its dense and diverse population, this is a significant achievement," stated the DRP official.
Progress and Participation in Dharavi Redevelopment
As per recent figures, numbering has been completed for 85,000 tenements, while over 50,000 have undergone door-to-door surveys. The Dharavi Redevelopment Project is India's largest slum rehabilitation initiative. It aims to transform Asia's biggest slum into a modern urban hub, benefiting nearly one million residents. Around 1.5 lakh tenements will be rehabilitated, providing better housing, infrastructure, and economic opportunities while preserving the dignity of Dharavi's people.
After several unsuccessful attempts over past decades, Dharavi's redevelopment has finally commenced. Once finished, this project will set a global standard for human-centric slum redevelopment. "This milestone shows that we are committed to moving forward with benchmark facilities," said a spokesperson from Navbharat Mega Developers Pvt Ltd (NMDPL), the Adani Group-backed agency handling the redevelopment.
Comprehensive Housing Solutions
NMDPL is a special purpose vehicle formed between the Government of Maharashtra through DRP/SRA and the Adani Group. A previous survey by Mashal in 2007-08 identified around 60,000 eligible tenements in Dharavi. Current estimates suggest most tenements have grown to G+2 levels, increasing those needing rehabilitation to about 1.5 lakh. Even upper floor structures are included under current tender provisions.
"We are proud to be part of the government's home-for-all policy," added the NMDPL spokesperson. Under tender terms, eligible residents will be rehabilitated within Dharavi itself. Ineligible residents will be relocated to modern townships outside Dharavi but within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), featuring modern facilities and holistic amenities.
Modern Townships for Better Living
Unlike other projects where residents are placed in high-rise slums, this initiative plans well-organised townships with wide roads, green spaces, and proper water and sewage systems. These townships will also include multi-modal transport hubs. Facilities such as schools, healthcare centres, playgrounds, community centres, and shopping complexes will be available.
This redevelopment aims not only to improve lives of relocated Dharavi residents but also enhance infrastructure and living conditions for the neighbourhood and Mumbaikars at large. "This redevelopment as well as infrastructure will not only improve the lives of relocated Dharavikars but also enhance infrastructure and living conditions of the neighbourhood and Mumbaikars at large," stated the spokesperson.
