Did Your Phone Buzz Out of Nowhere? India Tests New Disaster Alert System Nationwide | Check Details
India Tests New Disaster Alert System: Mobile users across India received an unusual tone on their phone, followed by a warning message flashing on their screens on Saturday, May 2. The unexpected alert was part of a nationwide test conducted by the central government to evaluate a new mobile-based disaster communication system designed to deliver real-time emergency warnings.
Officials from the Department of Telecommunications and the National Disaster Management Authority have stressed that these alerts are part of a trial, not real emergencies, and people do not need to respond.

Why Did Your Phone Ring Out of Nowhere?
As the central government executed the pilot test of the nationwide disaster system, you and your family members could have also heard an unusual warning tone from your mobile phones.
The test alerts are linked to a new Cell Broadcast facility that works alongside existing SMS-based emergency warnings. Authorities are running large-scale trials before formally launching the upgraded mobile-based emergency alert mechanism for public use. The exercise aims to check how well the system works on different networks and devices across India.
New Disaster Alert System Nationwide
According to the Ministry of Communications, the Department of Telecommunications, in partnership with the National Disaster Management Authority, is working to strengthen mobile-based disaster communication systems nationwide. The goal is to send critical information quickly to people in threatened or affected areas, especially during severe weather, industrial accidents, and other sudden emergencies.
NDMA has already put in place the Integrated Alert System, known as SACHET, which was developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics, the research and development centre under the Department of Telecommunications. This system follows the Common Alerting Protocol approved by the International Telecommunication Union and now covers all 36 States and Union Territories.
Mobile disaster communication system technology and mobile-based emergency alert mechanism features.
SACHET currently pushes disaster and emergency alerts through SMS to mobile users located in specific geo-targeted zones. Officials said this platform has supported public safety efforts during natural disasters, cyclones, and severe weather events. More than 134 billion SMS alerts have been sent so far, in over 19 Indian languages, reaching people in high-risk regions.
To cut response time during fast-moving crises such as earthquakes, tsunamis, lightning, gas leaks, or chemical hazards, authorities have added Cell Broadcast technology to the mobile disaster communication system. Unlike SMS, Cell Broadcast allows messages to appear at the same time on all compatible phones within a defined coverage area, which helps deliver alerts almost in real time.
