The Indian stock market is all set for its special Diwali Muhurat trading session on Sunday, November 8, 2026, allowing investors to grab the opportunity of the auspicious Laksmi Pujan. It's a traditional old belief that any fresh buying during the auspicious hour of Lakshmi Pujan will most likely bring great fortune, blessings, and prosperity to wealth. BSE and NSE have accordingly continued to open the stock market for an auspicious one hour.
This year, the main Diwali falls on Sunday and hence will be open. This Muhurat trading, experts believe, would likely be constructive with renewed buying momentum from both domestic and foreign investors.
The Diwali Muhurat trading has broadly closed on a positive note for the past seven years, running to 2024 and 2025. Typically, the gains ranged from marginal to 1% in Sensex and Nifty.
Ahead of the 2026 Muhurat session, the Sensex closed at 81,028.02, registering one of its strongest weekly gains of 2026, by skyrocketing 5,631.69 points, or 7.5%, from November 2-6. Nifty 50 also climbed by 1,762.55 points or 7.6% to close at 25,030.35.
Beyond its technical and macroeconomic significance, today's session carries a deeper cultural weight that long predates modern market analysis. Muhurat Trading traces its origins to 1957 at the Bombay Stock Exchange, later adopted by the NSE in 1992, rooted in the age-old tradition of opening fresh account books on Diwali to invite prosperity for the year ahead. While the session typically has only a modest impact on market movements, historical data shows that markets have delivered average gains of around 0.5% in years when Muhurat Trading has ended on a positive note, as per Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money.
