US Supreme Court Hearing Timings

The court is set to release rulings at around 10 am ET (1500 GMT), ie 8:30 pm IST on Wednesday, reported Reuters. The court did issued one ruling last Friday but did not act in the tariffs case, which was argued on November 5.

The cases before the court focus on the "reciprocal tariff" scheme that President Donald Trump unveiled in April 2025. Under this plan, the US applied a 10 percent basic tariff on most imports from April 5, while also preparing a second, tougher layer of country-specific duties aimed at governments labelled as having the most "non-reciprocal" trade barriers.

Trump Warns of Mess Ahead of US Rulings

Days ahead of the US SC ruling, President Donald Trump had issued a stark warning. Donald Trump had argued that there would be a "complete mess" if the Supreme Court were to strike down his tariffs.

"It would take many years to figure out what number we are talking about and even, who, when, and where, to pay,"Trump said. In recent months, Trump has repeatedly bemoaned the legal battle over his trade strategy.

Supreme Court Review of Trump Tariffs

The secondary tariffs under Trump tariffs varied by country group and rose to about 50 percent in some instances, with implementation scheduled from April 9. Plaintiffs challenging the plan argued during Supreme Court hearings on November 5 that IEEPA does not permit such broad, across-the-board duties, saying tariff-setting remains primarily a power of the US Congress.

Supporters of Trump tariffs countered in court that the emergency statute gives the President enough authority when trade is defined as a threat to national economic security. The Supreme Court's interpretation will decide whether emergency powers can justify sweeping import duties, and could either encourage or restrict similar actions by future administrations.

US Tariffs on India

The United States imposed around 50% tariffs on Indian exports to the US. With this, India is among the countries which are worst hit because of Trump tariffs. Indian exports attract a combined 50% duty in exports to the US, which includes a 25% reciprocal tariff announced on April 2, plus an extra 25 percent secondary charge that Washington links directly to India's ongoing purchases of Russian oil, a policy that has complicated wider trade negotiations between the two countries.
