Accompanied by a heavyweight business delegation featuring Elon Musk and Tim Cook, the US plans to discuss tariff extensions and regional stability while seeking to establish new trade and investment boards for future economic cooperation.
US President Donald Trump said on Monday that the upcoming visit to China and meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping should deliver "Great things" for both countries, as Washington and Beijing prepare to discuss trade, security and technology issues during the 13-15 May trip.
Trump, who plans to travel to China at Xi Jinping’s invitation, framed the visit as a chance to deepen economic links while protecting US interests. The White House said the talks will focus on trade, Iran, tariffs, Taiwan, artificial intelligence and critical minerals.

Geopolitics and trade tensions during Trump visit to China
US officials said Iran will feature strongly during the Trump visit to China. Trump is expected to question Beijing over energy trade with Iran and over dual-use exports that US agencies link to Russia and Iran, reflecting broader concerns about regional security and sanctions compliance.
Trade frictions will also come under review. Officials noted that Washington and Beijing may discuss whether to prolong the one-year trade truce agreed in October, although they stressed that no final decision has been taken on any extension or related tariff changes at this stage.
Diplomatic schedule and future exchanges linked to Trump visit to China
Beijing confirmed on Monday that Trump will be in China from 13 to 15 May. Plans include a welcome ceremony and formal talks with Xi Jinping on Thursday morning, followed by an afternoon visit to the Temple of Heaven and a state banquet later in the evening.
The programme for Friday features a tea meeting between the leaders and a working lunch, after which Trump is scheduled to return to Washington. Officials said the visit also seeks progress on a possible US-China Board of Trade and Board of Investment, plus cooperation in aerospace, agriculture and energy sectors.
Trump has described the relationship with Xi Jinping as positive, and officials view the Trump visit to China as a chance to stabilise ties while protecting US economic and national security interests. Kelly said Xi Jinping and Xi Jinping’s spouse are expected to travel to Washington in 2026, signalling plans for continued high-level engagement.
